How to watch YouTube videos on your Nokia S60 3rd Edition FP 1 & FP 2 phones with Flash Lite 3 support

December 1, 2008

Many people have faced the problem of accessing YouTube.com through the phone browsers, as clicking on a video in m.youtube.com website leads to RealPlayer popping up, which in turn gives connection errors, sometimes loading, but never actually working. Even after setting up the Default Access Point in the Settings> Streaming and keeping the Proxy “OFF” doesn’t help.

Personally I don’t use m.youtube.com that’s why I don’t have the settings, but some readers wanted to try, so as soon as I figure out how to fix the connection errors, I’ll share the solution with you guys.

The reason why RealPlayer opens up, is because m.youtube.com website is optimised for Mobile viewing, so it has .3gp format videos, not flash.

Now the thing which most non-techie people don’t know or fail to notice is that our lovely Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 & Feature Pack 2 devices (with latest firmware updates) have Flash Lite 3.0 which enables simple desktop Flash 8 content to be viewed through the mobile browser :)

“…Flash Lite 3.0 enabled phones support Flash Lite content as standalone, screensaver and in the browser. This means that you can see YouTube flash videos directly in the S60 Web browser…”

To view flash videos in the S60 Web Browser, you’ll first need to check if you have Flash Lite 3.0 support or not. This can be done by checking the “About Application” of your phone’s “Flash Player“:
Menu> Applications> Media Folder> Flash Player> Options> About Application
flash-lite-3-s60
Now that you have checked that you have a Flash Lite 3.0 enabled phone, you don’t need to use YouTube’s Mobile Website anymore. Simply log into YouTube’s Original Desktop website and all the videos will work easily.

Go to your S60 Web Browser and check the settings:
S60 Web Browser> Options> Settings> General
s60-browser-options-general

S60 Web Browser> Options> Settings> Page
s60-browser-options-settings-page

S60 Web Browser> Options> Settings> Privacy
s60-browser-options-settings-privacy

1) Open the www.YouTube.com on the Built-In S60 Web browser.

2) On opening, you will see that the browser has led to
the Mobile Websitem.youtube.com“. Scroll down to the end of the webpage,
and click on ” VIEW DESKTOP VERSION

3) Here is a Screenshot of the List of videos when
I searched for Nokia E71 on YouTube

4) I selected & opened the “Nokia E71 Smartphone
Review” to view

4) That’s it. Now enjoy the videos in your Symbian S60 browser :)

5) Double-clicking will open the YouTube video in Full-screen

As an alternate method to view YouTube videos, I mostly use the MobiTubia application on my Nokia N82.

You can find MobiTubia on it’s Official Website:

Thanks for the post, tried going per your instructions, it gives me a msg saying flashscript is off or abode flash player not installed and when i go to adobe to download it, i get a msg saying platform not supported.

i do see a flash player in installation flash lite 3.0, works great with other flv files but youtube issue remains.

    Hi there!
The Nokia E71 is a Flash Lite 3 enabled phone. I have easily viewed Youtube’s videos on my friend’s Nokia E71 web browser, so if you are having problems, then this means that something is wrong with the settings in your phone.

Double check the settings and try again.

Secondly, opening the Flash Player as a standalone application will not let you view Youtube. Please use your S60 Web Browser as mentioned in the post.

At the end of the post I have also given the name of an alternate Application called MobiTubia to view the videos. You should try that as well.

well too bad … it seems youtube changed their site and it dont longer works this way …
and now to bring u all the bad news .. youtube mobile has a diffrent stock of video’s.. ive seen that video’s werent available on mobile while i could view them at the desktop version .. very sad from google (the owners of youtube now) they just couldnt let it work .. this sucks big time cause as some of u might have seen
the quality of youtube video has always been terrible on ur pc .. but now since its this bad we could actually have quite pleasent picture quality with this poor desktop quality .. but youtube mobile is a TOTAL DISASTER …this is cause at youtube (or google wichever way u look at it) they actually managed to fuck the quality up even more and decided to call it mobile cause of low bandwith usage and 3gp support (with as a result unviewably bad (desktop)quality is now looking like coloured pixels without any possibillity of actually seeing anything else then moving coloured pixels and they actaully dare to call it video!!) it seems like now all we can do is HOPE THAT SOME-ONE FINDS A WAY OF CREATING A PROGRAM THAT WILL ACTUALLY RUN THE DESKTOP VERSION ON A MOBILE.. THIS BECAUSE OF RECENT SITE CHANGES ON THE YOUTUBE HOME SITE.. ITS NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO USE YOUTUBE IN UR NATIVE PHONE BROWSER EXCEPT OFCOURSE OF THE EXTREMELY BAD QUALITY OF MOBILE YOUTUBE.. this is just BAD!! very bad move youtube/google!!!

      @A Nokia N95 8GB Owner
Google bought YouTube 3 years ago in 2006, so this news of yours is actually no news at all. Any changes in the server has made no effect whatsoever on viewing the “Desktop” version of YouTube on our Flash Lite 3.0 supported S60 Browsers.

YouTube was & is working absolutely fine using the latest MobiTubia Application, as well as in the Symbian S60 Browsers with Flash Lite 3.0 support.

For a second there I thought that you were either joking or trolling. Seriously, atleast get your facts right when you predict all the doom & gloom.
