I’m back again after a long break!

Well, the latest is that I deactivated Telenor’s Smartmail package on my Telenor Persona postpaid connection. It was seriously useless. I’m extremely disappointed by Telenor’s idea of trapping customers by providing incorrect information.

I went to the the main Telenor office in Islamabad where I had bought the Smartmail package, and now they have confirmed that the internet on the PC was ONLY available due to a fault in their system, and they never intended to provide unlimited GPRS/EDGE on Smartmail package for PC use. A very kind person, Mr.Muhammad Ahmed, who commented on my blog has also confirmed this.

It’s been a couple of weeks since my MSN and Yahoo messengers stopped working on my computer. Then hotmail stopped opening. I thought maybe it’s because of the underwater internet cable that was cut, but now I’m not quite so sure.

I hooked up my laptop with Wateen’s Wimax net and tried the messengers, they worked without any problems. Then I tried Telenor’s Smartmail memail GPRS, and the messengers stopped working.

The strange thing is that when I try Telenor’s Internet APN on the PC, the messengers work, but they stop working as soon as I try Telenor’s memail APN.

This problem only happens when I use the computer. Using the memail APN on the phone itself, both the mobile messenger’s FRING and SLICK work.

I called the Customer Support at 345 to check what was up, and they said that there is some sort of an upgrade going on, but I doubt it. The information provided by Telenor’s Customer Support representatives are useless. They are well mannered and talk politely, but they don’t know a darn thing of what they are talking about. I’ll check up with the people at Telenor’s office as soon as I get some time.

A friend of mine, recently bought Telenor’s Smartmail package to use internet on his laptop, and went through hell, because of wrong information given by Telenor’s Call Center about the APN setting.

Telenor only tells customers about defining the Access Point in the phone, but forgets to mention that to use internet on a laptop, you also need to define the “PACKET DATA Access Point” setting in the phone, and the Access Point in Nokia PC Suit.

Please note that this is Telenor’s Postpaid Smartmail GPRS APN Setting. (This will not work on Prepaid)

1) Go to MENU> TOOLS> SETTINGS> CONNECTION> ACCESS POINTS
2) In OPTIONS make a NEW ACCESS POINT with USE DEFAULT SETTINGS

CONNECTION NAME: Smart Mail
ACCESS POINT NAME: memail
USERNAME: Telenor (case sensitive)
PASSWORD: Telenor (case sensitive)

Once the APN has been saved, reboot your phone by switching it off, and then switching it back on. This will clear out your phone memory and ensure that your new APN is picked up for usage.

Now that your phone is rebooted, you need to test the APN and see if it is setup correctly. Open the web browser on your phone and connect to http://telenor.com.pk

If the website does not open up successfully, you have not setup the APN correctly, or you do not have GPRS access on your phone. Contact Telenor Pakistan helpline (345) or visit the Telenor Pakistan Walk-in Center.

Got Telenor’s Unlimited GPRS/(EDGE where available) postpaid package. (Unlimited GPRS/EDGE is only on available on the phone. It cannot be used on a computer)

The package cost a total of Rs.4000 (this includes one time security & activation charges)
I have the Rs.250 Line Rent and a Rs.1000/month GPRS connection.

So far the results have been good. Using the E61i with Unlimited EDGE is awesome. (Note: It doesn’t work on the PC)

Telenor’s Smart Mail “Nokia Intellisync” Email Client is working great, though it is a bit heavy. All my gmail mails are getting pushed to my E61i without any problems.

Now I don’t have to manually check if I have emails in my Inbox or not. Each time an email comes, there is a beep, just like when I recieve an SMS, and I know an Email has arrived. Composing Emails & attaching files are as easy as 1-2-3 in SmartMail.

When using heavy websites like Yahoo! Mail Web (http://mail.yahoo.com) version, I close the SmartMail software. Note: There is no need to close SmartMail software if using Yahoo! Mobile (m.yahoo.com)
